Are You Growing or Scaling Your Business?

Are You Growing or Scaling Your Business?

To answer this question, it’s essential to understand the fundamental difference between the two. In my experience, growth and scaling represent two distinct phases of business development.

The Growth Phase: Building Vertically📈
Think of growth as vertical. Imagine you are building a multistory skyscraper, adding floor after floor as you introduce new products and services. At this stage, you are primarily working in your business. You are the “rainmaker”—the primary engine—and without your direct effort, the growth stops. For many, this is the ultimate goal, and there is nothing wrong with staying at this level.

The Scaling Phase: Expanding Horizontally⚖
For those with a vision for broader expansion, there comes a point where you must transition to scaling. Using the same analogy, scaling is building multiple skyscrapers. This phase is horizontal; you shift from working in a business to working on a business.

The key to scaling is realizing you can no longer do everything yourself. To impact more people, you must embrace the philosophy of “Who, Not How,” popularized by my early mentor, Dan Sullivan. When I decided to scale, I focused on becoming excellent at my unique strengths and delegated the rest. I had to let go of certain tasks, while still maintaining high-level tracking of my results.

Understanding where you currently stand—and where you want to go—dictates how you should invest your time, money, and energy.
