The Power of the Pivot: When What You Do Becomes Who You Are

Have you ever wondered how you ended up in your current career or business?

It’s possible your specific role didn’t even exist when you were in high school. Did someone mandate your path, or does it feel like a happy accident? I’ve come to realize that most of us experience a “pivot point”—a specific moment in time that either reveals a new opportunity or confirms that our work is truly our mission.

For me, that confirmation came over 35 years ago in a way I’ll never forget. I had already been building businesses and speaking for years, but this experience shifted my work from something I did to something I am.

I was attending a National Speakers Association meeting. Being an early arrival, I found the ballroom doors open and went in to claim my seat. The keynote speaker was already there, walking the room to get a feel for the space. Not wanting to interrupt his concentration, I stood quietly by my chair. Suddenly, two hands covered my eyes, and a voice whispered, “Do you know who this is?” “Yes,” I laughed.

“It’s Charlie ‘Tremendous’ Jones!”

We spoke for a few minutes and snapped a quick photo. His talk that day was electric, lasting nearly two hours. When he finished, the MC informed us that while Charlie would have loved to meet everyone, he had to rush to the airport for his third round of chemotherapy the following morning. No one in that room had any idea he was sick.

I slipped out to the large foyer, leaning against the far wall just to watch him leave without getting in the way. As Charlie walked out, he spotted me. He walked directly over, hit the palm of his hand hard on my forehead, and walked away without saying a single word.

The onlookers were confused, but for me, it was one of the most impactful moments of my life. When I heard that Charlie had passed away six months later, I realized what had happened: he was passing on the blessing. It was the ultimate confirmation that my work mattered. At that moment, my career transformed into my calling.
