What makes the difference to winning in business and life?  Is there a secret or is it luck?  I believe the answer is visible all around us.  In sports, it’s the last extra lunge.  In business and life, it can be seen as going the extra mile and giving the bakers dozen (13 instead of 12).  So what is it that gives us the ability to have the slight edge that propels us to the winner’s circle?

First, have a clear vision of the outcome you desire. I’ve found it helpful to ask myself “What does my business/life look like in five years?” A vision is the road map to the future. Without a clear vision, you won’t know if you’re on the right road.

Second, unwavering commitment. Have the belief and attitude that it’s not IF but WHEN the vision will be reached. This is not to say there won’t be challenges and moments of doubt. This is normal, but when they appear, you will keep moving forward.  Sometimes it may seem like you’re moving so slowly that you have stopped.  But keep asking the question “What is the next step?”.   Without motion, you cannot have motivation. Taking the next small step can keep you going when things get tough.

Third, have that burning desire called passion. Passion is the fuel that takes you to your destiny. Passion comes by looking beyond what you do.  It’s seeing what the benefit is.  It’s asking, “What is the value in taking the trip?” Passion cannot be created, but is rather the natural result of identifying your purpose.

This may seem oversimplified, but it has been my observation that it’s these three areas that allows anyone “To Win by a Nose”.  Enjoy the ride!
